リバーサイドのシソワット岸壁を毎日旅することで知られ、多くの人に愛されてきたパーチーダムのサンボが、昨日モンドルキリ州で伝統的な葬儀の後、安らかに眠った。メスの象は、歯と足の潰瘍との長い闘いの後、金曜日に63歳で亡くなった。
プノンペンの象徴的なゾウの悲しい死は、モンドルキリ州にあるゾウの保護施設、エレファント・バレー・プロジェクトによって伝えられた。
エレファントバレー・プロジェクトはサンボの死を発表し、「今日はとても悲しいお知らせがあります。私たちの美しい可愛いサンボが、夜のうちに息を引き取りました。歯の感染症との長い闘いの後、彼女の健康状態は先月から悪化していました。彼女は63歳で、エレファント・バレー・プロジェクトでの9年間の引退生活は素晴らしいものでした。私たちは皆、心を痛め、少しショックを受けています」。
モンドルキリ県にある象の保護施設では、1990年代初頭に地元の人々や観光客の心を掴んだこの象のために、伝統的なクメール式と先住民ブノン式の葬儀を執り行った。
1990年代初頭にワット・プノン史跡で観光象として働き始め、2012年までプノンペンの主要な観光名所となった。引退後、サンボは2014年12月にモンドルキリ州のエレファント・バレー・プロジェクトに移された。
エレファント・ライブリフッド・イニシアティブ 環境のエグゼクティブ・ディレクター、クン・ディオン氏によると、サンボはエレファント・バレー・プロジェクトのもとでモンドルキリ県に移されて以来、足のトラブルに悩まされていたという。

しかし、介護者の懸命な努力にもかかわらず、彼女は最期はまともに食事もとれないまま息を引き取った。彼女は飼い主であるシン・ソーンとその家族の土地に埋葬され、彼らはモンドルキリに最愛のプノンペン・パーチャダームの記念碑を建立することができた。
エレファント・バレー・プロジェクトサンクチュアリには、オス1頭と子ゾウのジーピッチ（ダイヤモンド）を含む11頭のゾウがいるが、サンボは8年間の滞在中、他のゾウと交わることはなかった。
カンボジアには、主にカルダモン山脈とモンドルキリ州、ラタナキリ州に400頭の野生のアジアゾウがいると保護活動家たちは推定している。
サンボは、東南アジアに70頭いる家畜化されたゾウの1頭である。
